What is an upstand in waterproofing?

Question

What is an upstand in waterproofing?

Expert Answer
An upstand is a vertical section of a roof or floor slab that turns up against a wall or parapet. In waterproofing, the upstand is a critical detail. The waterproofing membrane must not just stop at the floor edge; it must continue up the upstand (typically 150mm minimum) to prevent water from overtopping the membrane during heavy rain or flooding. Terminating waterproofing flat without an upstand is a common cause of leaks.
